"MAD IN PURSUIT"

In a show of sometimes
dismayingly slick thesis work,
School of Visual Arts MFA
photo grads seem deter-
mined to prove they/re ready
for the world. And plenty of
them are. Laura Griffin/s deft
"Notations" on the urban
scene, Ofer Wolberger/s
interior views of abandoned
or transitional commercial
spaces, and Julia Cowing/s
all-but-inpenetretable black-
on-black portraits (collectively
called "Strangers in the
Night") stand out. But the
show-stopper is an
installation of handbags
made by H. Cheryl Yun from
newspapers, each featuring
a repeated image of a natural
disaster, a war, an oil spill,
or other bad news. Cleverly
constructed in several
recognizably chic styles,
these small, intricate pieces
turn consumerist culture/s
obliviousness to the world
at large back against itself.
